Note that only shade loving plants will grow beneath Norway maple trees - decorative bark is an alternative. Keep the area free of competing weeds for the first few growing seasons. Rain water is more acidic than tap water and better for foliage colour. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. Water well and regularly throughout spring and summer, increasing in periods of hot or dry weather. Norway Maples require a good watering regime for the first couple of years.
